A large blue and white porcelain platter illustrating a scene from the novel Xi Xiang Ji (The West Chamber). The border is elaborately decorated with floral and scroll motifs within reserved panels. The reverse bears an underglaze blue flower mark.

Xi Xiang Ji, or The West Chamber, written by Wang Shifu during the Yuan dynasty (13th–14th century), tells a tale of love constrained by societal conventions.
It follows Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, who falls in love with Cui Yingying, a young woman of good family. With the aid of Hongniang, the maid, the lovers are able to meet in secret, and after many trials, their love is eventually recognized.
