ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
The Eight Horses are a legendary motif associated with the figure of King Mu of the Zhou dynasty (the fifth emperor of the Zhou dynasty, 1023–983 BC). This king reigned in the 10th century BC.
According to the ancient text titled Mu Tianzi Zhuan, which recounts the fabulous journeys of this sovereign, King Mu undertook a long westward journey, covering thousands of li (old units of distance), pulled in a chariot by eight extraordinary horses. These coursers accompanied him all the way to Mount Kunlun, a mythical region considered to be the domain of the gods and of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu), with whom the king shared songs and feasts during his visit. In this ancient tradition, the names of the eight horses vary according to the sources, with each name reflecting the colour or particular strength of the horse.
