A rare Turquoise Gu-Form Vase.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
The form of this vase, known as ‘Gu’, is one of the principal Chinese archaistic forms. The gu (觚) was originally a ritual bronze vessel in ancient China. It is recognisable by its curved profile, narrowing at the waist.
This form endured well beyond its original ritual function. Numerous craftsmen adopted models derived from ancient bronzes and adapted them to jade, stoneware, cloisonné enamels and porcelain.
These turquoise porcelains enjoyed considerable success in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century. They were often adapted through the addition of gilt-bronze mounts in order to integrate them into European interiors, and in this respect became indispensable to the decorative arts.
