A porcelain bowl with reticulated sides, decorated with five medallions containing underglaze blue landscapes. The medallions are surrounded by two decorative bands.
INFORMATIONS COMPLÉMENTAIRES :
This type of openwork porcelain is known as “Linglong” or “Devil’s Work”. This technique has been used from the early Ming Dynasty to the present day.
BIBLIOGRAPHY :
For an identical bowl, multiple sources can be cited, including auction sales, inventories, and various publications. The most relevant reference is the catalog documenting the pieces from the Hatcher Cargo (The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes, The Complete Record, Colin Sheaf and Richard Kilburn, p. 44).
Although it is impossible to certify that this bowl originates from the Hatcher Cargo, the majority of such models do. The high concentration of Ming Dynasty porcelain—particularly 17th-century pieces—recovered in this cargo (approximately 25,000 items) likely explains why many Linglong bowls on the market, for example, are described as coming from the Hatcher Cargo.
