A porcelain plate with a central grisaille decoration of a gentleman and his dog, depicting John Cecil, “The Lord Burghley.”


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

This decoration is inspired by an engraving by Petrus Schenk (1660–1718). The engraving in question is based on an engraving made by John Smith (1652–1743) in 1686, which itself was inspired by a painting created the same year by Willem Wissing depicting John Cecil, “The Lord Burghley,” 6th Marquess of Exeter.

This decoration is illustrated in the book La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à décor occidental, F. and N. Hervouët, p. 71, 3.17.
