A set of two knives, the handles decorated in Famille Verte enamels; one handle is decorated with flowers, the other with birds among flowering branches.

The blade is made of steel and the ferrule of silver, dating from the early 18th century.
These types of pieces are very characteristic of Chinese export porcelain. They result from the adaptation of a Kangxi-period porcelain handle with a European blade, and are the product of orders orders made from the late 17th century to the early 18th century.
At the time, it was customary for people to have their own personal cutlery. Such utensils were brought to a host’s table by their owner. Cutlery sets did not become widespread until later in the 18th century. Historically, individual knives or sets of knives with decorative handles , were fashionable among the elite, reflecting both status and taste.
