The five figures are, in order, Li Tieguai, Shoulao, Han Xiangzi, Zhang Guolao, and Lan Caihe.

Li Tieguai embodies humility, healing and compassion: pictured with his iron crutch and magical gourd, he helps the sick and needy.

Shoulao symbolises blessed old age: wisdom, longevity and the wish for a long, prosperous life.

Han Xiangzi stands for art, music and harmony with nature: he is often shown playing a flute — a symbol of poetry, inspiration and spirituality.

Zhang Guolao represents wisdom, experience and a freedom from conventional norms: often depicted riding a white donkey, he embodies the value of age, knowledge and long life.

Finally, Lan Caihe evokes freedom, spontaneity, joy and independence: often shown with a basket of flowers, with an appearance sometimes androgynous, he or she symbolises unpredictability, simplicity and harmony with nature.
