A covered porcelain “partridge” tureen painted in a highly naturalistic manner.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

This covered “partridge” tureen is based on a Meissen porcelain model, which inspired English factories such as Bow. Indeed, a pair of the original Meissen version is listed in the inventory of Burghley House, Stamford (Burghley House, CER0661). A Chelsea porcelain example can also be seen in the British Museum (object no. 1928,0116.8.CR). Likewise, a Bow version is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A, no. 414:330/C–E‑1885). The Meissen prototype was widely influential, not only at Bow or Chelsea, but across several English manufactories.

William Sargent, in The Copeland Collection: Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures (pp.204–205, fig.99), notes that the example illustrated on page 205 – virtually identical to ours – derives closely from the Bow model.

There is other variants of this model; see, for instance, Cohen & Cohen, Angels and Demon Layer, p.52, fig.31, and a pair of a similar model in Jorge Welsh, Animalia, 2024, p.260, fig.47.

The piece we are presenting is painted in a particularly naturalistic style, with exceptional attention given to the bird’s neck and plumage.
