Rare porcelain teapot decorated in Imari and Kakiemon style with a tiger and four birds flying among prunus branches. The animals are depicted around the body of the piece.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  :

The decoration was added later in the Netherlands, circa 1715–1725. Although this teapot appears to be unrecorded, two of the four birds adorning one side can be found on a plate illustrated in European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, Helen Espir, 2005, p. 41, fig. 7. The later decoration is attributed to the workshop of Adriaan van Rijsselbergh, and the birds are painted in a distinctly Kakiemon style. A third bird, nearly identical to the one flying above the tiger on our teapot, appears on a large dish decorated in the Netherlands and illustrated in the same publication, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p. 83, fig. 14.

A further characteristic of this Dutch decoration in the Japanese Kakiemon style is the motif of rice straw bundles, painted with grey enamels and tied with bands of yellow, blue, and gold enamels. This motif is repeated on either side of the teapot. Beyond the tiger and birds inspired by Kakiemon designs, this teapot presents several features consistent with the work of Adriaan van Rijsselbergh’s workshop on Chinese porcelain.
